So, i have been building bicycle wheels for 10+ years, and have gotten pretty good at it. The process of picking out the parts is pretty standard. Measure the hub flanges, hub flange spacing, rim diameter where the spoke nipple seats, and what cross lacing pattern you will use. Enter that into one of the many online spoke calculators and BAM!....you know what lengths you need. Picking out the spokes is just a matter of choosing the brand and whether it's a J-bend or straight-pull spoke. There are some options like bladed(aerodynamics), different forms of butting, colors, etc...
But when I try to research how to build a motorcycle wheel, i get almost nothing. the closest I have come to actual instructions is to call the spoke company(Buchanan I believe it was) and tell them what hub and rim you have and they will cut them for you.
Is this all there is to it? And what if I wanted to use some kind of non-standard hub on an aluminum rim, or piece some old parts together? I'm not really in the market yet to get some wheels, but I thought maybe some people could chime in and get a discussion going on this hard to find topic. In magazines, I see lots of customs getting a hub from this bike, and rim from that bike, so on and so on, but no real info on how it's being done.
Anyone?
