I have an opportunity to purchase a 1987 XLH 1100 with 32,000 miles for around $2000 maybe less. I have heard and read alot of issues with the 4 speed transmission. I have read the fixes regarding buying the Zipper Trapdoor and bearings. My question is, would the transmission issue (which would add another $500 in cost to the purchase to fix) and any other issues with this model prevent you from purchasing this bike?
I already have a bagger as my primary bike that is in really good shape. Just wanted something I could ride that would have a different feel to it. Something I could tinker with and customize and ride as a second bike for cheap money. But I also dont want to purchase something that will constantly be down for maintenance and issues.
I love the look of it, style, paint on tank, and it is an 1100 so its pretty rare.
Is this a reliable model and does the trap door fix the transmission issue completely? Or should I stay away. I could pay another $1000 and get a pre rubber mount 1200 or 883 that is a 5 speed. I guess with the trap door purchase the difference would only be $500 not $1000. But I do like the way this bike looks alot.
Here is a link to the bike. Still gathering more info on it.
