My '01 xl883c just hit the 50k mark, no oil leaks or smoke, but the front exhaust pipe is making a dry shik chik tk tk noise off the rear end, not the header end while the rear pipe pers a beautiful boom boom, had no luck changing the gasket or even the pipes, so its not a pipe leak, ive been told its a valve problem, estimated at $800+ but im sick of being ripped off. The noise is louder on idle when cold evidently sounds like air shk shk and blows less and colder that the rear exhaust but its hot at mid to higher rpm. When i tried brand new pipes + gaskets, the front pipe turned deep blue at the header after only a 22 mile 60m/h run, while the rear one barely yellowed, may be a blowtorch effect from the front exhaust valve not opening properly. Could it be a broken spring or worn front exhaust cam instead of a burnt valve? because it holds idle, doesnt smoke and rides good, but the sound is ill.
