1990 883 Rear Pad Removal

Just picked up a 1990 XLH (4 speed, chain drive) and trying to replace the rear pads. Had to buy a special tork allen socket, but got the 2 bolts out.
Assumed like on my prior sporties, I would just lift up the wheel cylinder and expose the pads. Doesn't really want to come off. Moved the rear shock out of the way (chain side) and slipped off the upper portion of what appears to be holding the pads. Still a no go...what am I doing wrong? Have other year shop manuals, but not for the 1990. Thanks in advance...Hobbs
