York, PA. Bikes, races, swaps...

It's that time again.:banana The annual White Rose Thunder motorcycle event is Sept. 19, 20 & 21 at the York Fairgrounds. Bike show, swap meet, vendors galore and AMA flat track races all in one place - for one price. Where else you gonna have this much fun for fifteen bucks?

The AMA "all star" racers will be tearing up the York 1/2 mile on Saturday while the regional "amateurs" will be racing Sunday. This is one of the many confusing titles at York as some of these guys fit in and race in, both categories but hey, who ever got tired of seeing too much flat track?:dunno

Once again this year, some of my friends will be running an antique bike exhibition race just before the mains on Saturday afternoon. This should be worth the price of admission in and of itself! Where else within a day's drive are you gonna see 100 year-old motorcycles RACING? Yeah, that's right, "exhibition race" is another of those misnomers. These guys are racing to win. :tour
Last year there were four bikes, two mid-20's Excelsiors and two mid-teens Harleys running in the four lap event. The race was all set to be a runaway by the young guy on a 1914 H-D when he crashed in the forth turn on the last lap. Yeah, that's right I said CRASHED! Crashed a 100 year-old motorcycle... and the bike's owner was overjoyed at having provided such an authentic show! :yikes Check out the photos in the link above, for photos and info on the races. This is the real deal.
It's rumored there will be two or three times as many bikes this year, but as with anything about these temperamental machines, nothing is certain yet. If you're within an hour or two of York, this is one event you don't want to miss though.

I have NOTHING to do with this event or any of the participants, vendors, etc. except for personal knowledge of and friendship with some of them. It's just such an awesome weekend I like to share with like-minded folks. See you there!

Rubbermount_EVO Led Strip. Run/Turn/Brake

I have a 2012 sportster 48. I want to remove the stock bullet tails and was wondering how I could get an L.E.D strip to mount under a chopped fender and function as Run/Turn/brake signals. Im not a wiring guru by any means but isnt the stock setup on these newer models all Run/Turn/Brake? I would imagine a plug and play kit would be out there for this.

Ironhead Pointers with picking an Ironhead

I'm currently obsessed with the Ironhead and it's motor, primarily for it's looks. I have been looking at a few Craigslist postings, and wondering if I should pull the trigger.

I'm looking for a project bike, to put in a little bit of work and learn a bit more about this old engine.

What kind of things should I look at and consider?
Any bad years on this engine?

I live out in Southern California, and some people are asking for quite a bit for these bikes. in the 3-4k range. a few listings are even over that.

for example, this is one of the lowest postings i've seen:

I'm trying to decide if it's worth pursuing this obsession or not.

XL 1200 Customer: No electrical power except to odometer

I have an electrical problem with 2001 XL 1200 Custom. I recently moved and had to put the bike in a storage garage. I would start the bike and let it run or take it for a ride at least once a week to keep it charged. When I have not started it for a while (a week or so), I sometimes have to crank the starter over for about 2 – 3 seconds, let it rest for a few more seconds, then crank it again and it will start right up. This time, I cranked it for a few seconds (it cranked normal, not sluggish, etc.), rested for a few seconds, and then went to crank it again and there was nothing at all: no power to lights, blinkers, or anything while the key was in the ignition position. White the key in the accessory position, there is only power to the odometer. The odometer light comes on and so does the mileage reading but only in accessory position.

I checked and cleaned all fuses, the 30 amp maxi, battery terminals, and cables, etc. The battery was fully charged and turned the bike over great just prior to the problem, but I took the battery out and charged it on a tender, tested it, (12.8v) and replaced, but nothing changed.

I have researched this forum for some other posts and thought I found the solution that was posted in 2011 (faulty ignition switch post). Therefore, I replaced the ignition switch but it did not change anything. I have taken the tank and seat off and exposed most of the wiring. I have looked for obvious signs, did wiggle test, taken connectors apart and cleaned them, etc.

I am at the point of exhausting my ideas other than just starting to replace things, which could be a waste of money and is not a very good method . . . Anyone have some insight or help? Thanks!

Skully, pricey but looks awesome! rear view helmet

I need to rebuild my starter solenoid. I have the Factory service manual but it says nothing about rebuilding the solenoid. Is there any tutorial or video or write-up on doing this with the starter still on the bike? I have a 1992 883 and need help with this. Thanks!

Shinko 712 tires ?

Anyone tried these cheapo's? .....are they Stinkos? :D
Thinking about ordering a set for the old Ironhead so I can ride it.
Can't afford much right now and those 18 year old Dunlops have got to go before I ride it anymore than around the block.
I found I could put together a set from eBay for about $125 shipped to my door.
I won't be riding this bike daily or likely more than 50 miles from the house so even a cheap tire would probably last me quite a while.
Just wondering if any of y'all have tried them and what you thought about the ride.

Ironhead My '82 Build

I thought I would share my 82 build with the group. A little background. Ive had this bike for 4 years, paid 2500 for it. The po told me he had recently put a 1200 kit in the motor yada yada. The bike never did run right, I was really unsure of what the bike really had in it. The wiring was a mess and the bike stranded me constantly and had a tendency to run hot. I had never rebuilt a motorcycle but I love the old ironheads and decided this bike would be my first. I disassembled the bike, organized the parts and packed it away in my kitchen where it sat for 3 1/2 years.

Ive started the build process with sandblasting the frame and swingarm and getting them painted. The forks have been rebuilt including new caliper bushings, damper wear rings, seals and neck bearings. I also bought new progressive suspension springs. Ive started assembly of the front end and will have it together this coming weekend.

I also have started disassembling the engine. I pulled the front jug and the first thing I notice is a big meaty push rod that has S&S 1000 in bold letters on the side. I'm not sure yet what pistons I have but the top end looks good. I did notice the front cylinder has some damage around the stud hole. Now for those of you needing sporty pron fix here we go.

Ironhead 79 IronHead Brake Lines Cleaning

$

The brake lines on my 79 Ironhead look still good (no cracks of any kind) on the outside. The metal sleeves and fittings at the ends do show a little rust, but not bad. When I bought the bike, the DOT 5 fluid in the master cylinders was not much of a liquid anymore but was in different stages of coagulation. I cleaned up and restored the calipers just fine. Next I was going to buy and install new Russell stainless brake lines. However for the sake of keeping the bike as original as possible, I wouldn’t mind using the original rubber brake lines. My question is: How would I go about cleaning the little bit of rust, but mostly how would I go about cleaning the insides of the lines? I have searched the internet and have seen plenty of thoughts on this but most of them seem to be “try this” or “try that”. A local semi-retired Harley mechanic (he works mostly on seventies Shovels and Ironheads) first runs a skinny wire through the lines, then blows out the lines with compressed air, then allows denatured alcohol to sit inside the lines for a while followed again by another compressed air blow out. This sounds like a “reasonable” approach. However, I am always looking for second opinions. Since I am sure that many of you at some point have gone through some type of brake-line cleaning process, I would love to hear your thoughts on this issue.

Garage Queen Battery Charge Schedule

$
0

Hey guys,

Sadly, my sportster is currently a garage queen until I can get the flat tire and intake leak sorted. It has been sitting most all summer, hopefully this winter I'll get her back on the road.

That being said, I haven't had the trickle charge on the battery 24/7 as some would, and im wondering whats the best schedule for keeping the battery maintained without doing much harm to the battery.

Currently, I've had two instances over the span of 6 months, I go start the bike 2-3 times a month usually on the weekend and twice now the battery has been too weak to start the bike, so then out comes the trickle charger to charge it up over night and its good as new again. Does this cause any hard wear/tear issues on the battery? I'd like to hope not as it has been mostly accidental and not a true discharge like I left the keys on all night.

Is it bad to charge the battery only when its so low it cant start itself, or should I just put the trickle charger on it over night once a month just to be safe? This would prob be the proper maintenance conditions for a strong reliable battery.

Is this how most people keep their batteries when they store long term (for those of us who leave our batteries in the bike) or is there a better way I am not quite seeing?

Any help is appreciated,
K'd Up

Hello!

Bought my first Harley about 3 weeks ago - a 2007 Sportster 1200 Low.

LOVE. IT.

Been trolling the boards for a while, figured it's time to officially join the community. While I don't have much to offer others yet, I hope to be able to give back/pay it forward some day soon.

Requesting Current Breakdown of Classes

EDIT: Found this. Sorry fellas...

http://www.nhradiv6.com/apcm/templat...=385&zoneid=28

I'm interested in running a Sportster at my local Drags in Shannonville/Mosport. What are to current classes, and rules that are subject to each?

A look at NHRA.com proved to be a lot of reading and touching very little on bikes.

Thanks,
Ian
