Ironhead Generator Cooling

From what I have read here on this forum and from my experiences, I think it can be agreed that one of the main problems with the OE generator setup is overheating. I realize that overheating is often the symptom, with the root cause being something else wrong (discharged battery, wiring problems, faulty regulator, etc.), but it would seem better cooling could help to prevent damage and failures.

With that being said, has anyone experimented with better air cooling? One thought I had was to run the generator without the brush cover #30475-66 (the band clamp that seals the end cover #30132-61). I realize it is put there for a reason, and I assume that reason is to keep the generator weather-proof. However, a fair weather bike could stand to have pretty good airflow through the internals if the brush cover was not installed.

Thoughts? Experiences?
