Two Colorado hunters have been indicted in the death of a motorcyclist who was killed when he hit a chain they had stretched across the highway to retrieve a dead elk.
Mark Valdez, 47, of Delta and Kevin Keener, 43, of Anton were charged Friday with numerous felonies in the death last year of 34-year-old Trever Rawson of Fountain, according to a news release from Colorado State Patrol.
The charges include manslaughter, vehicular homicide, reckless endangerment and failure to render aid after an accident involving death, along with multiple other charges.
On Oct. 12, around 5 p.m., the suspects were attempting to retrieve an elk they killed earlier in the day near Colorado Highway 92 in Montrose County, authorities say.
The men stretched a chain and rope at chest height with the tension across both lanes and the shoulders of the highway in order to drag the carcass toward the road, the state patrol said in the release.
Rawson rode into the chain, was thrown from his bike and died at the scene, according to the release.
Authorities charge Valdez and Keener did not call 911, nor did they help the victim in any way.
In addition, the two allegedly bribed a teenage witness to assist in covering up their involvement, according to the release.
