My new '04 1200 Custom has a sissy bar installed that I would like to remove.
It's a three-piece unit with the padded back rest bolted to two plates, one of which is installed on each side of the fender, sandwiched between the fender and the frame. Each side plate is held in place by three bolts through the frame, two of which interfere with the rear wheel as they are removed inside the fender. Presumably I will have to support the motorcycle with a lift, then remove (or at least move) the rear wheel in order to remove the two which pull out from inside the rear fender.
Any tips for removing the plates without scratching the gorgeous paint on the rear fender?
