Ironhead 75 ironhead clutch problem

I recently built up a 75 ironhead and I am new to this damn motor so bear with me haha. I got it all wired up and it fires. The clutch cable that was in it was about to snap but I put it in a clutch lever just to pull it so I could make sure that the tranny would shift through all the gears. I screwed in the primary nut and As soon as I pulled the clutch in it made this weird popping noise and then all of a sudden it was all slack and no tension. What did I do wrong? I have no clue what the nut and flat head screw inside the primary hole are for? Tension? Now it has no tension and my clutch won't even pull in. It feels like it popped out of place inside the primary and I don't know what to do. I ordered a new clutch cable because the one I had is about to snap. How do I install the new clutch cable and adjust it just right so this won't happen again?? All I did was screw in the big nut that covers the nut that's screwed onto the threaded peice with a flathead at the end. If you know what I'm talking about. I'm new to all of this and I'm trying to learn. Do I drain the primary oil first then take off the casing so I can replace the clutch cable? And what do I do with the tension bolt? How do I not -I LUV XLF!--I LUV XLF!--I LUV XLF!--I LUV XLF!- that up again. Please help. I'm in desperate need of help. Thank you.
