Okay, let me preface this by saying my work shut down due to "inclimate weather" so I've been sitting around all afternoon with my brain chugging along trying to think of something besides all the idiots out on the road.
I've reached the conclusion... no, that's not right. It's more of a hypothesis... that's not really right either. Let's just say it popped into my head when I was driving to get lunch that common sense could be a constant value per area divided among the available people within the given area. In other words, if there are few people within a given area, the amount of common sense distributed among those few means quite a bit of common sense for each person. The more folks that live within the same area have to share the same amount of common sense so there is less to go around. And among those will still exist ppl with lots of common sense which means even less for the rest of the ppl in that same given area.
Remember back when America was a lot of farmland, ranches, and plantations? Neither do I, I just read about it in books, but you know what I mean. Let's just take a slice of 5 square miles in the rural countryside. Maybe there were two families living within that 5 square miles. Lets say and average of 4 people per family and that means 8 folks sharing x amount of common sense for that 5 square miles. Just for the sake of argument, we can assume the parents have most of the common sense so a majority of the common sense is shared by 4 people and what's left over is divided amongst the kids. Lets say one of the parents is a drunk or becomes mentally unstable. That means more common sense to be shared among the other 7.
Let's fast forward to 2010. There is now a couple big subdivisions with more than 1000 people (that's a random number I pulled out of my butt since I have no desire to research actual population densities for urban areas, and 1000 is a nice even number) in that same 5 square miles. There are still some folks with common sense but that leaves hundreds of parents and children to fight for the few scraps that are left. I would like to think the parents would get the lion's share of what's left but I'm not so sure anymore. Then you have the runts that barely get a whiff of the common sense that's left.
And then you can have a thread titled "That's gonna hurt" where lots of those left danging at the end of the common sense chain can be seen in action.
