Blowing oil filter gaskets

I have a 2001 Buell Cyclone. I'm posting here because it's basically a 1200 Sportster motor.
Here's what's happeining.
A few weeks ago I started it up, rode about 1 mile and noticed by foot was covered with oil. Turned out the oil filter gasket had blown and it was blowing oil out there. I suspected a bad filter/gasket.
I replaced the filter and oil. No problems for about 800 miles.
Then it happened again.
I put on a new filter, rode it 1/4 mile and that one blew.
I then removed the filter and removed the filter adapter (the adapter was finger tight). The check ball pushed in easily and I could feel the spring pressure. Spring is light - FSM says 6 psi to open the check ball, and it felt like that.
I reinstalled the adapter and filter ( i know, need a new one), but I tighened it up and the blown part seemed seales. I started it up just to test and after about 15 seconds at 1,800 rpm I heard a pop and oil was spraying from the blown filter gasket.
Any ideas appreciated.
