So, I have this 90 Sportster (883, 4 speed tranny). I got it from a shop with the clutch and transmission already out of the bike. The magnets in the clutch were broken and it had a bent shift lever. The shop said the customer couldn't afford the new clutch shell so he left it there. I replaced the clutch shell and new clutch plates and new shift lever. Bike fired right up and ran great (kinda).
So thats the background and here is my problem.
I can't shift into second gear, when I try it stops in neutral and wont go any farther. I can shift 1st to neutral and back no problem. If I install the transmission in the bike in second gear, I can shift from through 2nd, 3rd, 4th and back, no problems. As soon as I down shift to 1st, it won't go back past neutral.
When I have the transmission out of the bike and on the bench, it seems to get stuck shifting to second if the ears on the 3rd gear aren't matched up directly with 2nd gear. If it does this, I turn the main shaft by hand and it pops right in.
Has any seen or heard of this? I'm at my wits end with it. Going nuts putting it in and out of the bike, testing and hoping.
Thanks.
